How To Make Body Butter

A Step-by-step Guide to Our Original Body Butter Formula

In celebration of our 10-year anniversary, we're sharing the original recipe we used when we first started! This whipped body butter recipe is rich in natural oils and perfect for nourishing your skin. Although we have since moved to a more temperature-stable shea cream, our original whipped body butter remains a favorite. Read on to learn how to make it yourself!

Why We Moved from Whipped Body Butter to Shea Cream

Whipped body butters do not require water, so they don’t need preservatives. However, they can be a nightmare to ship as they tend to melt above 75°F, arriving as a runny mess. That’s why we transitioned to making Shea Body Creams, which hold up better in higher temperatures. Unlike commercial body butters, our Shea Creams have a lower wax and emulsifier content, focusing instead on premium oils like Squalane, jojoba, and Tamanu oil.

The Original SoapLife360 Whipped Body Butter Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 8 ounces of raw Shea butter
  • 3 ounces of sunflower oil
  • 3 ounces of olive oil
  • 2 ounces of grapeseed oil (bonus if infused with calendula)
  • 2 ounces of avocado oil
  • 1 ounce of jojoba oil
  • 0.5 ounce of honey
  • 0.5 ounce of vitamin E
  • 1 ounce of unrefined beeswax
  • 15-20 drops of your favorite essential oil (we recommend lemongrass, frankincense, vetiver, or patchouli). Back then, we really leaned on the base side of things.

Instructions:

  1. Melt Ingredients: In a stainless steel pot, melt all ingredients except the grapeseed oil infused with calendula on low heat. Ensure the temperature reaches 165°F to melt the beeswax.
  2. Blend Ingredients: Once melted, pour the mixture into a stainless steel bowl and blend with a hand mixer until the temperature drops below 130°F.
  3. Cool the Mixture: Refrigerate or freeze the mixture for about 10 minutes.
  4. Add Grapeseed Oil and Essential Oil: Remove from the freezer and blend with the hand mixer at the highest setting until the temperature is around 100°F. Add the grapeseed oil infused with calendula, vitamin E, and your chosen essential oil. Mix thoroughly.
  5. Whip the Butter: Place the mixture back in the freezer until a crystallized waxy ring forms around the bowl with an oily center.
  6. Final Blend: Blend again with the hand mixer at the highest setting until the mixture forms whipped peaks.
  7. Store the Butter: Store your whipped body butter in a clean glass jar away from sunlight. It can last up to 18 months.
Application Tip

Since this formula doesn’t contain water, it feels and absorbs much better when applied right after a shower or bath. This helps to lock in moisture and provides an even smoother application.

How to Use Your Body Butter

Your body butter is super versatile. Here are some tips on how to get the most out of them:

  • For Hair: Use it on curly and textured hair to define curls, twists, or locks.
  • For Extremely Dry Areas: Apply it to dry areas like elbows and feet overnight to soften and nourish the skin.
  • As an Exfoliant: Add sugar or salt to a small amount of your body butter to create a gentle exfoliant for knees, elbows, and feet, helping to remove dead skin cells and amplify skin conditioning.
  • For Infants and Small Children: Consider leaving the body butter unscented for use on sensitive skin, infants and small children.
