How to Build a Skincare Routine

Formulator's Notes

Using Natural Products

The first question is never "what should I add." The first question is always "what are you already using?" Because building a natural skincare routine is not about starting over. It is about transitioning well.

Start with What's Already There

When someone tells us they want to switch to natural skincare, the first thing we ask is what they are currently using. Not because we want to critique it. We ask because skin is a living organism. It has adjusted to its current environment. It has adapted to the ingredients it has been receiving, the water temperature, the diet, the stress level, all of it. Change that too quickly and the skin responds in kind: breakouts, sensitivity, unexpected oiliness or dryness.

Skin needs to be asked permission before you change what you are doing to it. That philosophy holds in every area of body care: face, hair, nails, body. Ease into change and the skin meets you there. Force it and the skin pushes back.

The transition starts with what you already have.

You are not starting over. You are transitioning. There is a difference and the skin feels it.

The Transition Method: One Product at a Time

Rather than replacing every product at once, introduce natural products one at a time and let your skin adjust before adding the next. If someone already has a moisturizer they like, we start them with a cleanser. If they already have a cleanser and a moisturizer, we introduce a toner first. Layer by layer, step by step. The skin is never overwhelmed and you always know what is working.

This approach also makes it easier to identify what your skin responds to. When you change everything at once, you have no way of knowing what made the difference.

The Four-Step Foundation

Once you are ready to build a complete natural routine, here is the order we recommend and the principle behind each step.

  • Step One
    Cleanser: Protect What's Already There
If there is one product to change first, it is the cleanser. Many conventional cleansers contain detergent-grade surfactants that wash away far more than dirt. They strip the skin's natural bacteria, the beneficial microbiome that works around the clock to fight irritants, balance oil, and protect the skin barrier. No topical ingredient you apply afterward can fully replace what a stripping cleanser takes away. A gentle, plant-based cleanser that preserves your skin's natural bacteria means there is less to repair after every wash and less you need to add back in. Look for cleansers with non-stripping, plant-derived surfactants. Our Sagging Jeans facial bar is formulated on this principle.

  • Step Two
Toner: High Value, More Than One Job
A good natural toner is one of the highest-value products in any routine because it does more than one thing at once. Look for an alcohol-free formula that combines hydration with gentle astringent action. Ingredients like aloe vera and hyaluronic acid for moisture, alongside botanical extracts like hibiscus or schisandra berry that gently clarify and support skin turnover. This kind of toner works for combination skin, oily skin, and dry skin because it hydrates where the skin needs it and refines where it does not. It can also be used over makeup or as a midday refresh. Our Aloe Mist Toner was built for exactly this kind of versatility.

  • Step Three
Face Oil: Lightweight, Adaptogenic, All Skin Types
For anyone new to natural skincare, especially anyone new to face oils, the entry point matters. Look for a lightweight face oil built on noncomedogenic oils like squalane or argan, ideally infused with adaptogenic herbs like holy basil or ashwagandha. Adaptogens support the skin as it responds to environmental stressors: seasonal changes, shifts in climate, hormonal fluctuations. A face oil built this way is mild enough for oily skin and supportive enough for dry or aging skin. It should feel weightless, absorb quickly, and work for every skin type without requiring a separate product for each one. Our Greens & Olive Face Oil follows this formulation logic exactly.

  • Step Four: Nighttime
Night Cream: Support the Skin While It Repairs
Skin does its most active repair work at night, which makes this the right time for a richer, more supportive product. A night cream can be heavier than what you would wear during the day and that weight is an asset overnight. Ideally, look for one with low percentages of AHAs or BHAs, like fruit enzymes or fruit acids, that gently encourage cell turnover while you sleep. Even one percent of a fruit acid complex makes a difference over time without irritating the skin. The payoff shows up in the morning: skin that rinses clean more easily, absorbs morning products more deeply, and carries a slightly more visible glow. This is not a required step to start. But once your skin has adjusted to the first three products, a night cream is a meaningful upgrade.

What to Expect and When

Natural skincare is a lifestyle commitment. It is not designed to produce medical-grade or instant cosmetic results. What it is designed to do is support the skin's own intelligence over time and that takes time.

In the early weeks, some people experience what looks like a breakout. This is not failure. This is detox. Skin that has been exposed to synthetic ingredients for years will begin to clear those residues through the pores when the environment changes. That process can temporarily look like blemishes or congestion. It is a sign that something is shifting, not that you should stop.

Week 1-2
Skin is adjusting. You may notice some purging or sensitivity as it clears residue from previous products. Stay consistent.
Week 3-4
Skin begins to settle. Oiliness after cleansing may reduce. Skin should feel clean without feeling stripped.
Week 5-6
First meaningful results visible with consistent use. Better absorption, more even tone, less reactivity. This is where people start to feel the difference.
Beyond
Natural skincare compounds over time. The longer the commitment, the more the skin reflects it. Results deepen as the lifestyle expands.

The early signals are worth paying attention to even before the six-week mark. Noticing that your skin is not as oily four hours after cleansing is a signal. Noticing that your face does not feel tight or stripped after washing is a signal. The small changes tell you that you are on the right path before the visible results arrive.

It Does Not End with the Products

This is the part that does not get said enough. Natural skincare is not a product swap. It is a lifestyle orientation.

What you are asking your skin to do when you switch to natural products is respond differently. To be supported rather than managed, nourished rather than controlled. But the skin does not exist in isolation. It responds to everything: your cleaning products, your fragrance choices, your diet, your activity level, your sleep, your stress. Cleaning up your skincare routine while leaving everything else in place limits what your skin can do.

You do not have to change everything at once. But natural skincare works best as a starting point, not an endpoint. Start with your face. Then consider what else around you could shift, even in small ways. Reduce synthetic fragrance where you can. Add movement. Add water. Add whole foods. The skin reflects the whole body, and the whole body reflects the life you are living inside it.

You did not arrive at your skin's current condition overnight. Give the new direction the same time you gave the old one.

The ritual itself is part of the result.

A Note on Reading Labels Whatever brand you choose, learn to read the ingredient list. Understand what noncomedogenic means and why it matters for face oils. Know the difference between a stripping surfactant and a gentle one. Recognize plant-based preservatives like leucidal or sodium phytate. The more you understand what you are putting on your skin, the better decisions you can make regardless of which brand is in your cabinet. We have written about what makes a brand truly natural and how to know when natural products expire if you want to go deeper.
